The Correlation between Playfulness and Emotional Competence of Children

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to characterize correlation between playfulness and emotional competence of children. The subjects of this study were 562 elementary school students from 4th to 5th grade. The instrument were Playfulness Scale for School-Aged Children(Cho Mee Jeong, & Choi Tae San, & Choi Myung Seon, 2008) and Emotional Intelligence Scale(Moon Yong Lyn, 1996). Pearson¡¯s correlation and Multiple regression were used to analyze the research data. The results of this study were as follows: First, in case of elementary school students, emotional playfulness and social playfulness were meaningful explanatory variables throughout the emotional development. Second, except for emotional expressiveness, inquisitiveness and pursuit of fun explained all emotional development variables. Notably, In boys¡¯ case, sense of humor reduced emotional cognition and emotional regulation. and, In girls¡¯ case, sense of humor and pursuit of fun dropped emotional utilization. These results of this study could be used as the basis data for counselling environment
for elementary school students and parents and training teachers .
